Number of Coins for Vegas Slot Machines

Does it matter how many coins we use in Vegas slot machines? It depends on our goal.

We may use a number of coins to operate slot machines. We may choose to use 2 or 3 coins, or even 5 coins for mechanical slot machines. With electronic or video slots we can opt to use 45 or even more coins. When we hit a win, the pay is directly proportional to the number of slots coins we used in the play.

For instance, if we put in a single coin in a play and hit a 3-bar win, we may be paid out $10. But if we use two coins for the same play and hit, we are paid out $20. If we used 3 coins, then we get $30. And so on. To make the play more enticing, some slots have a bonus scheme when we aim for and hit the highest jackpot. So the thing here is to challenge players to put in 3 or more coins of the required denomination to hit a much higher jackpot.

Thus, instead of just putting in 1 or 2 coins to hit $1,000 or $2,000 respectively, we'd be challenged to put in 3 coins for a hit of $5,000, instead of $3,000. For the same effort and luck, why not win more with just mere one or two additional coins? Such promo makes more money for the casino and makes more fun for the player. Do we always have to play the maximum required coins? If we stick to our one-coin play policy we often get only one percent less of the usual return—as long as we use the same denomination.

But if we opt to use a lower denomination—like playing quarters instead of dollars—the cut is more than one percent from our winnings. So it's more profitable to stick with the higher denomination and just use single coins per play than opt for lower denominations and play with multiple coins. The jackpot may make the difference more pronounced, but there's a slim chance we'd hit the jackpot each time—we're lucky if we hit it once a month. So we go for the small wins most times.

Higher denominations are good when we aim for the progressive jackpots. That's when we use multiple coins. But with regular jackpots it's enough to use single coins. Thus, the number of coins has significance in our plays and wins at Vegas slot machines.
